About the scheme
Cyber Essentials is a UK government-backed certification scheme that was introduced in 2014 to help businesses protect themselves from cyber threats. It is designed to provide a basic level of cybersecurity for organisations of all sizes, and it focuses on five key areas: boundary firewalls, secure configuration, user access control, malware protection, and patch management.
Cyber Essentials certification demonstrates that a business has taken steps to secure its IT systems and data against common cyber threats. It is becoming increasingly important for businesses to achieve this certification as cyber attacks are becoming more frequent and sophisticated. By achieving Cyber Essentials certification, businesses can show their customers, partners, and suppliers that they take cybersecurity seriously and are committed to protecting their sensitive data. It can also help businesses to comply with regulations and win new business opportunities.

Cyber Essentials 5 Key Controls
Boundary Firewalls and Internet Gateways: Organisations must have secure firewalls and internet gateways in place to control access to their networks from external sources, as well as to restrict the flow of sensitive information.
Secure Configuration: Organisations must ensure that all their devices and software are securely configured and that they are patched and updated regularly to address vulnerabilities and reduce the risk of cyber-attacks.
Access Control: Organisations must limit user access to systems and data based on the principle of least privilege, ensuring that users can only access the information they need to do their jobs.
Malware Protection: Organisations must have anti-malware measures in place to protect against viruses, ransomware, and other malicious software that can compromise the security of their networks.
Patch Management: Organisations must maintain an up-to-date inventory of all their software and hardware assets and apply patches and updates as soon as they become available to address vulnerabilities and reduce the risk of cyber-attacks.
